Are you breaking the law?
If you even posess a halon fire extinguisher on your boat - you are breaking the law!
Since the 1st January 2004, because of the damage it does to the Ozone layer, Halon is banned and you risk prosecution if it is found on your boat.
Some facts & figures
- Surveys show that many existing fire extinguishers on boats are empty!
- Unworkable extinguishers may, in the event of a fire, totally invalidate your insurance
- Halon cylinders have to be disposed of in an approved manner
- Over 150 countries have agreed to the Halon ban - so there is no escape - extinguisher checks may become part of the inspection on arrival at a foreign port.
- Fire at sea is one of the most dangerous life threatening emergencies that can happen
- 99% plus of private pleasure boats have no fire alarm fitted - even though the family may sleep on the boat!
